The familiar combination of letters on sunscreens – SPF (Sun Protection Factor) – is an indicator that only shows the risk of skin burning (caused by UVB rays), but it has been scientifically proven that cell damage and irreversible DNA changes are caused by UVA radiation. Skin aging is caused by the entire spectrum of sunlight – both visible and infrared radiation. The filters included in Institut Esthederm sunscreens protect the skin from both UVA and UVB rays, as well as other rays of the light spectrum, which is why Esthederm indicates the level of protection with suns instead of SPF.
